Our story

Assisted Living By Hillcrest was founded over 20 years ago by the late Harry Macco, in honor of his best friend Al Vanden Heuvel. Harry’s vision for providing the highest quality of life possible was his focus when building his first CBRF, and still remains the company’s focus today. Through the years Harry continued to fulfill his dream by building facilities where residents feel at home, smile, engage with others, receive exceptional care, and enjoy life.

Assisted Living By Hillcrest has continued to exemplify his family-run business, while expanding to offer management services, creating their own staffing services and most recently opening their CBRF Course Training Center. Proper education and staff training are of top priority in providing compassionate and personalized care for each resident.

My love and passion for elder care began when I was blessed with the opportunity of taking care of the two biggest heroes in my life, my mom and dad…

My parents were both diagnosed very early on in life with Alzheimer’s and dementia. I was very fortunate to be able to care for them for several years before it became necessary to place them in a facility. This was very difficult for me to do. In honor of my parents, after my father’s passing, I was determined to make it my life’s mission to learn as much about caring for the elderly, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, so I could own my own facility and care for as many loved ones possible I am so grateful to do what I do each and every day. I will continue to mentor and educate staff, friends, loved ones, residents, and communities….to ensure the Most Attentive Care.

My compassion and connection with the elderly began when I was a child. As a first grader I adopted a grandparent at the nursing home I lived near. I would beg my mother to take me to visit “Lulu” because I didn’t get to see her long enough when visiting her through school. With each visit to the nursing home I had a feeling of fulfillment and knew I wanted to grow up to become a nurse and help all the “Lulu’s.”

As a teen I began working in the laundry service department at the nursing home, by the age of 18 I had become a Certified Nursing Assistant, and 10 years later I returned to school to become a nurse. During this time my Grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and even though each day was different we made the most out of what God had given us.

Through my personal experience as a family member and caregiver I ensure each resident is treated with dignity and respect. I wish for all staff, families and community members to understand the elderly are individuals regardless of their diagnose, and each one of these amazing individuals have their own story.

My passion for caring for the elderly, along with my love for learning, is an interest I hold dear to my heart. After being raised on a farm in Upper Michigan I decided to obtain my nursing degree as an LPN from Bay de Noc Community College, while working as a CNA. With over 25 years experience in healthcare, I have spent the vast majority of my nursing career caring for the elderly in clinics, hospitals, home health,  nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.

To further fulfill my love for learning I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Human Bio/Health Science/Chemistry, studied Business, Accounting, and even Master’s courses in Forensic Science at UWGB.

It is so enjoyable to talk with our residents and hear their stories. It is an honor to share in the last chapter of our residents’ lives, while providing the best care and comfort to the families and the loved ones they have trusted to us.
