Employee Training

Every staff member of Assisted Living Communities by Hillcrest is required to be Dementia Specialist Trained, no matter their role or title. There are numerous ways staff members are educated in Alzheimer’s and dementia: from seminars by Dementia Expert Teepa Snow, to completing online training by the Institute for Professional Care Education and virtual training called "Walk a Mile in their Shoes".

All employees are required to complete classes in First Aid and Choking, Standard Precautions and Fire Safety.  Additionally, any C.N.A. that passes medications to residents needs to complete the Medication Management class and be certified, as well as complete a minimum of 15 hours of in-services per year.  The Dietary Needs class is mandatory for all Dietary Aides.

Teepa Snow

Teepa Snow's philosophy is based on years of making mistakes and perfecting a positive approach to care giving.  Her teaching style integrates facts about the brain and how it works, or doesn’t work in the case of dementia, with expertise in adult learning principles.  She is an advocate for those living with dementia and has made it her personal mission to help family and professional caregivers better understand how it feels to have dementia so they too can be better caregivers. Since her lectures are usually done in the first-person – as if she is the person with dementia – her training gives the audience a first-hand understanding and experience with the disease and a hands-on opportunity to try out new skills in a safe and fun environment.

Institute for Professional Care Education (IPCED)

The Institute for Professional Care Education provides workplace training and ensures compliance with state approved caregiver training programs.  The education program meets applicable state and federal requirements through comprehensive training, while offering effective and engaging initial training and continuing education courses.    Assisted Living Communities by Hillcrest mandates our entire health care team, front line, professional and other staff to complete 15 hours of training per year per state standards and an additional 10 hours per year as the companies’ standards. We are committed to providing quality dementia care.
